Ulric River

Area: Zec Chauvin Near Sacré-Coeur.
Interest: ★★★★
SufferFactor: ★★
Difficulty: Class V
Season: The Ulrich is a late spring run or goes during the summer/falls after a rain. First of June would be my best bet or in between 80-120 on this gauge Here during the snowmelt or above 100 after a rain.
Level: Visual at the bridge on the way in if the river looks low option b would be to put in at the bridge and skip the upper part that need just a bit more water. 12 beams from below river right is good for the upper and high for the lower part
Time: 4-8 hours

Put in / Take out information: HERE

Alright, I’ll try to give you the beta of this very good run that I have chased a long time before being able to run once. The first two times we've been there it was too high, so don’t be surprise if you get skunk there, levels are hard to predict in that area of Quebec. The Ulric is easy access on a dirt road. For the take out, you will need a bit of clearance or a car that you don’t own. On your way to the put in, you will cross a bridge, which is the mid-point of the river. This is where you can see if the level is good.

The upper Part of the Ulric is mostly class 4. The first class V is a mini gorge a bit hard and long to scout. You have to scout on the left side of the river. The next big rapid, the main feature of the upper section, is a nice double drop. Scout/walk on the left. First boof on the left then second one is a nice 15 footer off the right wall.

After more class IV, you will eventually get to the last big triple drops right above the bridge. It never been run, but could run at the good flow. Scout/walk river right

After the bridge, you enter the Lower Ulric. The river gets wider and become steeper. The Lower is a notch above the Upper so if you found your limit on the Upper, I suggest to stop at the bridge. For those of you who came for class 5, the fun begins. First rapid is a big double drop with a small pool in between the 2 drops. The second one reconnects so you don’t want to run it on your head. Scout/walk on the left a

Not So far after, you will get to a super cool triple boofs. Make sure to stop after because there is a big waterfall that you want to scout. You scout the triple boof on the left side and if you do not want to run it, then you can walk the triple boofs and waterfalls all on the left. On our trip, the water lever was not right to run the waterfall, but at lower water, it definitely goes.

Next class V is a technical rapid ending in a big hole. The hole doesn’t look good at all, but we all pass through with no problem. Maybe You'll be the one to get a ride in it ? who knows....

Then, the river gets wider. There is still couple of slides and waterfalls until the confluence to the Sainte-marguerite Nord-Est. At that point, it will probably be dark, so make sure to mark the takeout before on a map or let something by the river to make sure you do not skip the takeout. Enjoy!!
